About RC Midelti
RC Midelti was born in the town of Midelt, nestled near the towering snow-capped Atlas Mountains, on the high plateaus of central Morocco. A place of vast horizons, shifting winds, snow capped mountains, ochre earth and vivid greens, Midelt left an indelible mark on the artist’s soul. As a child, RC Midelti would gaze through his classroom window in his small school in town, dreaming to be transported to the snows of Jebel Ayashi rising 3,337 meters into the sky. The immense skies, flowing streams, storks (considered sacred) nesting in the summer, the omnipresent donkeys, defining poplars and cypruses, and luminous air of his childhood in Morocco continue to breathe through his work. His artist name, “Midelti,” pays homage to that formative landscape.
His father was the director of the lead mine of Ahouli-Mibladen, a site now known for its rich mineral and gem deposits. While the mines are long closed, the region has evolved into a provincial hub, vibrant, educational, and increasingly cosmopolitan, mirroring the artist’s own journey from rooted beginnings to expansive expression.
RC Midelti’s artistic path began not in formal art studies, but in the museums, galleries, and bookshops of Paris. After secondary school in Rabat and philosophy studies at the Sorbonne, he found his true education in the city’s vibrant art scene. Painting became his language—an evolving dialogue of experimentation, comparison, and spontaneous discovery. The thrill of a new series emerging under his brush remains a constant source of creative energy.
His early years in Paris during the 1950s and ’60s were marked by participation in group shows and three solo exhibitions, marking his emergence as a painter. In 1968, he relocated with his wife and two children to Jakarta, Indonesia, where he taught art for over thirty years at the Jakarta International School (n/k/a Jakarta Intercultural School). His commitment to nurturing creativity through individual exploration shaped generations of young artists both in his elementary and high school classes.
RC Midelti continued to paint and exhibit throughout, moving intuitively from one series to the next – each one a fresh attempt to reveal deeper layers of reality. In 2000, he built a house and painting studio in Rungan Sari, near Palangkaraya, Central Kalimantan (Borneo), where he lived and worked until 2018. Surrounded by nature, stars, and stillness, his studio became a sanctuary for his later works.
In 2002, his twenty-year retrospective in Sydney, “RC Midelti, Realities,” showcased a body of work dedicated to unveiling unseen truths. Whether through abstract gesture or layered symbolism, RC Midelti’s later works probe beyond realism—toward the essence of experience, memory, and imagination.
Now based in Jakarta, RC Midelti continues to paint—ever exploring, ever evolving.
